It is almost a cousin to Spanish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/romesco-sauce-recipe\/\">romesco sauce<\/a>. I was raving to a friend about roasted red pepper hummus when she asked, &ldquo;have you tried muhammara yet?&rdquo; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She got me going on a muhammara hunt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have tried all sorts of it and have been playing around and perfecting this homemade muhammara recipe, which is now a constant on my table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is a different kind of red pepper dip&ndash;next level delicious.<\/strong> If you&rsquo;re a fan of flavorful dips and spreads to serve with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/easy-mediterranean-grilled-vegetables\/\">veggies<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/homemade-pita-bread-recipe\/\">pita<\/a>, you&rsquo;ll want to give this one a try. Leftover muhammara is great to spread on your sandwiches or serve with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/baked-chicken-drumsticks\/\">chicken<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/lemon-garlic-salmon-recipe\/\">fish.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-muhmmara-or-mouhammara\"><strong>What is Muhmmara (or Mouhammara)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Muhmmara is a hearty walnut and roasted red pepper dip or spread that&rsquo;s all sorts of savory, sweet, slightly smoky, and just enough spicy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word <em>muhammara<\/em> is from the Arabic word<em> ahmar<\/em>, which literally means red. This red dip, originally from the Syrian city of Aleppo, this delicious dip made its way from the heart of the Levant to many parts of the world including Europe and the U.S. You may have even seen muhammara jars at the grocery store&ndash;word to the wise, make your own!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7.jpg\" alt=\"Muhammara in a bowl with a side of pita bread\" class=\"wp-image-34694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7-1024x1536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/muhammara-recipe-7.jpg\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-in-this-muhammara-recipe\"><strong>What&rsquo;s in this Muhammara recipe?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To get our heads around just how different and exciting this roasted red pepper dip is, let&rsquo;s walk through the ingredients and what they each bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Roasted red peppers<\/strong>&ndash; I roast my own here, but you can use store-bought jars of roasted red peppers <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product-category\/olive-oil\/\">Extra virgin olive oil<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Walnuts<\/strong> (shelled)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bread crumbs-<\/strong> this adds heft and texture giving muhammara a rustic finish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/pomegranate-molasses\/\">Pomegranate Molasses<\/a>&ndash;<\/strong> adds a certain acidity, tang and sweetness. In a pinch you can substitute with a mixture of lemon juice and honey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/aleppo-pepper-aleppo-style-pepper\/\">Aleppo pepper<\/a>&ndash;<\/strong> distinctly Syrian chili pepper flakes from Aleppo. It is fairly mild and has the sweetness and roundness of the best sun-dried tomatoes you&rsquo;ll try. Aleppo pepper is also slightly spicy, the heat will build slowly leaving a fruity flavor. <strong>Find Aleppo pepper at our online shop <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/aleppo-pepper-aleppo-style-pepper\/\">here.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other flavor makers<\/strong> (this will vary somewhat from one recipe to another): tomato paste (I like this for added depth and color, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/red-pepper-paste\/\">Turkish Red Pepper Paste<\/a> works here as well), garlic, and <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/sumac\/\"><strong>sumac<\/strong><\/a> (for extra tang), and a little cayenne pepper for more spice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you make muhammara the more you&rsquo;ll adjust the spices to your liking. If you enjoy hot dips, you can absolutely kick the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/aleppo-pepper-aleppo-style-pepper\/\">Aleppo pepper<\/a> and cayenne up a couple notches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-i-substitute-for-aleppo-chili-pepper\"><strong>What can I substitute for Aleppo chili pepper<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&rsquo;m such a big fan of the sweet, tangy, and just enough spicy <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/aleppo-pepper-aleppo-style-pepper\/\">Aleppo pepper flakes<\/a>. You&rsquo;ve seen me use it in chicken kofta, shrimp and rice, white bean salad, and even on baked eggs. And it&rsquo;s a key element in muhammara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some say you can substitute Aleppo pepper for a bit of ancho chile pepper  mixed with a pinch of salt and some cayenne. I cannot personally vouch for how close a substitution that will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Note: check our <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/\">online shop<\/a> for all-natural <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.themediterraneandish.com\/product\/aleppo-pepper-aleppo-style-pepper\/\">Aleppo-Style Pepper<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-serve-with-muhammara\"><strong>What to serve with muhammara?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You will typically find muhammara served as a mezze dish with other dips like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/baba-ganoush-recipe\/\">baba ganoush <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/how-to-make-hummus\/\">hummus<\/a>, of course. I also like to add a salad like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/tabouli-salad\/\">tabouli<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/fattoush-salad\/\">fattoush,<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themediterraneandish.com\/mediterranean-chickpea-salad-with-zaatar-fried-eggplant\/\">chickpea salad.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-storage\"><strong>Storage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Muhammara will keep in the fridge anywhere from 4 days to one week, if properly stored. Some say you can freeze it, but I haven&rsquo;t personally tried that, we&rsquo;ve always been able to wipe that bowl clean!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father, who has been to Aleppo, Syria some years ago, speaks of the hospitable culture and the vibrant flavors of the city.
